Molema basket weavers receive support from TCT
Tuli Conservation Trust is actively supporting the Molema basket weavers through the sponsorship of their market stall in Bobonong village. This pilot project is designed to assess the viability of the local market for selling basketry products produced by these groups over a period of six months.
This initiative came about as a response to concerns expressed by the weavers regarding the prolonged periods their products remain unsold, something which is perceived to discourage younger generations from participating in the craft, thus posing a risk to the future of weaving skills particularly as the majority of practitioners are older artisans. Increased sales will therefore not only provide economic uplift to the basket weavers, but encourage the preservation of a traditional skill within the community.
The project is a collaborative effort that involves key stakeholders including the Bobirwa District Council, Botswana Tourism Organization, and SPEDU. It encompasses basket weavers from the Motlhabaneng, Lentswelemoriti and Mathathane communities.
Tuli Conservation Trust is funding the monthly rental costs for the market stall throughout the duration of the pilot project with an initial support of P2,400 for the first six months. To demonstrate their commitment to this initiative, each participating weaver contributes P20 to help cover the salary of the stall manager. Currently, there are 23 registered weavers who have submitted their products for this pilot phase.
